Honoring Ember: A Circle of Closure and Care
At Walk Intuit, every animal is part of our healing community.
Recently, we experienced the loss of one of our beloved chickens, Ember. Her presence was small in size but large in spirit—she reminded us of the resilience, curiosity, and warmth that animals bring into our lives each day.
When Ember passed, members of our team gathered together on the OPA Walk Intuit ranch to honor her life and her memory. Surrounded by horses, chickens, and team members, we created a mandala to mark this moment of transition. The circle held space for stillness, remembrance, and the acknowledgment that even the smallest creatures leave lasting impressions on the heart.
The Importance of Closure in Grief
Psychologically, rituals of closure are essential for healing. Whether through art, story, or ceremony, these practices help us externalize our feelings, recognize the reality of loss, and find meaning in endings. They give us a chance to come together in community, to grieve, and to honor the life that touched us.
In Ember’s passing, we were reminded that grief is not reserved only for humans. The bonds we form with animals, companions, guides, and teachers are profound, and honoring their lives helps us integrate both loss and love into our stories.
Respecting the Land and the Law
As we laid Ember to rest, we were mindful to follow all California laws related to pet burial on private property, ensuring care for both the land and the greater ecosystem. You can read more about California’s guidelines for animal care and disposal here.
Walking Together Through Grief
This ritual for Ember reminded us that grief is universal, yet no one should walk through it alone. At Walk Intuit, we hold space for grief in all its forms. We offer dedicated Grief & Loss Programs for children, teens, young adults, women, and men of all ages, creating a community of support for those navigating life after loss.
If you or someone you love is experiencing grief, we invite you to learn more about our Grief Groups.
Together, we honor life, loss, and the healing power of community.
